On April 9, 2018, Bodyguard Productions filed copyright infringement cases against another 138 Chicago residents. If you are reading this, you probably got a letter from your internet service provider about a subpoena in a Bodyguard movie download case. I can help you negotiate a fair  settlement that protects your identity and allows you to maintain your anonymity. Call 312-994-2424 for a free consultation with me, Attorney Erin Russell, to discuss your rights and the best way to protect your legal rights.

Bodyguard is suing for copyright infringement for alleged BitTorrent downloading and distribution of  “The Hitman’s Bodyguard.”  The film is a Ryan Reynolds/Samuel L. Jackson film with a 40% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Downloading and distribution can happen when people use apps or websites to watch movies they think they are watching for free.

Bodyguard filed a complaint, and then asked the court for permission to send a subpoena seeking your identity based on your IP address. Bodyguard gets permission from the judge to send out subpoenas to get your name and address from your internet provider. This is how they unmask the people they claim downloaded their movie. A copy of their complaint can be seen here. Bodyguard uses the same one in each case and changes only the list of IP addresses they attach to the complaint.

After your internet service provider gets the subpoena they send you a letter as required by law. You have a window of opportunity to settle your case before your identity is disclosed. Your internet service provider gives you a deadline a the bottom of the letter after which they are required by law to produce your information to the attorney for Bodyguard. It is best to settle your case before your name is disclosed if you plan to settle. You can maintain your anonymity and your information will not be released to the attorneys for the film.
